Says the author Art, Passion, Poetry was inspired largely by the fact that with teaching, research, writing, and painting, I have had less time for playing the piano, which I dearly love, and have played since age five. I have transmuted the musical urge into a different kind of music poetry, where I think my musical instincts are more developed than at the keyboard. However, the words of poems are as notes to me, and each line a chord or arpeggio or trill that, when the poem ends, has given me a distinct piece of music, with reflections of lived experience, memory, creativity, analysis, passion. My poems are musical pieces. When I finished selecting the right poems for my title, I realized that I had written a musical or poetic memoir of my life, one that has adhered from a love of linguistic and historical analysis together with Art, Passion, Poetry. Art, Passion, Poetry all play a part in each poem of this collection in a particular way, and usually in more than one way, often quite unanticipated. The poem's title may or may not reveal the major theme or themes of that poem. There are often choices of ethics, aesthetics, sensuality, and even cultural and political values that readers may be obliged to make to arrive at a conclusion near or far from the poet's. This is because Barbara Sher Tinsley believes that poetry places at least as much responsibility on the reader as on her own shoulders, while recognizing in a profound way that the transmission of any poem is a shared task, one of decoding the artistry and passion of each offering. She also engages her readers in conversations as significant to our human experience - whether creative or procreative or merely sensuous - as others that contribute to our economic, educational, professional, or mental well-being. Readers will discover that art, poetry, and passion are really one. Barbara Sher Tinsley, Ph.D. (Stanford '83), is a Fulbright Scholar who has published major works in Reformation Studies/Early Modern Europe, has also written a book on antiquity. A professor of history at several community colleges and four-year institutions in the Bay Area, she has now turned to creative writing and painting. Her first novel, Candida's Own Italian Renaissance, reflects many trips to Italy and a residence in Florence and in Alto Adige. She has lived in California for the last half century in a house well over one hundred years old. She is the poetry columnist for the newspaper Los Gatos This Week. Art Passion Poetry Barbara Sher Tinsley Books Reviews
My husband purchased this poetry collection for me, and I have read and reread it. I found the poetry intriguing and thought provoking. The poet forces readers into complex visual landscapes through her clever and moving word choices. This collection contains a full spectrum of themes. In each, the author not only draws the reader in, but also often leads to twists and turns that leave the reader delightfully surprised. This author invokes much passion--as the title of this collection suggests. She is adept at challenging the expected and anticipated; thus causing the reader to ponder, reflect and engage. As a result, the author has produced an inspiring collection which readers will want to repeatedly revisit--each time discovering new ideas and deep emotions.
So many themes run thorough this book from poem to poem. Barbara Tinsley takes the reader on a journey (a boat ride) through her own life and the lives and works of great poets, examining the themes of passion and love. She guides us like a lighthouse into memory and meaning, and we see reflections of our own lives on the rocky shore.
While the poetry in this collection is lyrical- rhymes- the thoughts are complex and wander rather far from the titles. In # 13. “The Soul and Beauty,” you expect these two to have a close connection. But by the end of the poem, you discover art is not the inspiration of the soul, but dreams are instead, which unite with the soul as beauty cannot. Why? The answer is left up to the reader. Is this Neoplatonism? In #14, “Perfection,” only two people can, it seems, share a perfect relationship and secrecy is key to perfect relationships. In #l9, “Poetry’s Staircase,” poems are magic stairways bringing climbers to the light, while prose is pedestrian and cannot aid the soul in accomplishing its task, finding truth. Barbara Sher Tinsley combines literature, theology, spirituality and reality using new forms, intriguing metaphors, artistic forms, and passionate language. The result? Verbal music challenging us to think as well as feel.
Sublime and thought provoking. As you read, you will be taken away- be able to escape. The author has done a masterful job of expressing through words, thoughts that will resonate with your soul! Each poem is completely different. Themes such as trust (No. 92,Trust ), fleeting time (No .103, Strings of Pearls), and changes in life (No. 24, Bridges) are written about in a romantic and creative manner, allowing you to reflect on your own life. This is a book you buy and you keep as you will come back to it and because you love it so much- you buy one for your friend- as you will not want to give your copy away but you will want to share it. This is a book you treasure. Kudos to Barbara Sher Tinsley for an excellent book!
Where to begin? Oh. Themes. This book really is loaded for bear. It has many, many poems that are directly about art, beauty and sex (passion); but not every art poem is just about art, and there are so many kinds of passions the author comprehends. There are for example poems (many) on poets and poetry); but she knows not all of us mortals are poets, so the poetry is really about Life and lives (ours) not just hers. And the poets are people like all of us struggling to solve important mysteries and everyday problems in their own lives. Then there are the nature poems- How could a poet less than a very capable like her write a 7-liner one on "Hummingbird Wings" that make you see one? Remind you of a time when you, too, were six,and then, end up on line 5 talking about her dead lover?!! This is roaring down poetry's hi-way at 200 miles an hour without getting a ticket! Across the page from it, I notice "Love's Magic." There, love is both magic and tragic. Well, the second stanza compares love to the movies, the theater, novels land passion generally. She thinks passion walks on tip-toe. Although I wouldn't have put it that way, I can sense she is on to something. This author gives you music, but also philosophy, depth, caring and verbal music. The little questions become the very biggest ones. I just love this book.I think any reader would!
These poems display wonderful use of poetic language and images. The author has deep insights into the human condition.
The title of Barbara Tinsley's book truly describes the contents. Art--written with passion--wonderful poetry! She will remind you of some of the great poets of the past--but with a modern touch. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves poetry!!
